The Local Port probably stands as the little genie behind these multi-room audio/music distribution systems which makes many different things possible. It is either built within the in-wall and desktop types of speakers or fully delivered as a separate unit, namely the Local Port Pad, the Mural Pad or the WiPadTM.

The Local Port Pad shapes both the whole house multi-room music coming in from the Controller and the user's private music from the local player for delivery to the associated speakers.

The Local Port Pad strictly associates with in-wall type of speakers and is fed power either thru the in-wall wiring or via an associated Power Adaptor which plugs directly into the Pad. The Adaptor option is mostly used in retrofit applications where wiring to carry power to the unit is unavailable. In those instances the Pad is best located near a power outlet to the end of plugging in the Adaptor as explained below.

The Local Port Pad may be located at any height on the wall, at convenient hand level like an electrical switch pad or anywhere best fits. The one single requirement will be that the Pad be placed close enough to a power receptacle so the connecting cord of the Adaptor may conveniently be kept to a strict minimum, strictly for esthetic purposes. Wherever a nearby power outlet is unavailable a Power Jack may be placed well below the Pad to allow plugging of the Adaptor's cord while the Jack connects to the Pad via in-wall wiring. A Local Port Pad that is fed thru an Adaptor may in turn feed power to other Pads thru in-wall wiring so the use of a power Adaptor at those other Pads may be waived.

In retrofitting projects the Local Port Pad makes it possible to install an in-wall speaker anywhere there is a phone jack. The installer will locate the Pad in an area of the wall near both the phone jack and power receptacle and open a fitting rough-in hole on the line above the Pad at the 3/4 height of the wall for the Speaker. The rough-in box for the Pad and the Speaker fitting carry side winglets for tightening them against the wall once in position within the wall, as shown in illustration. The Local Port instrument also makes it possible to replace or upgrade a whole multi-room music distribution system of the conventional type. At such effects, the Local Port Pad or the Built-in Local Port Kit may be used with any existing 8-ohm or 4-ohm speaker or speaker pair by retrofitting installed wiring.

Local Port Pads carry a selection switch for the user to select between wholehouse multi-room music and personal/favorite music. The personal music player plugs directly into the Pad. A volume knob on the Pad controls the volume level of the wholehouse music. Volume level of music played from a personal player is controlled at the player itself. A Local Port Pad must be used whenever the user ought to have control on volume level of sound outcast by an in-wall speaker.
