The music distribution system primarily runs on CAT5 wiring. A separate 4-pair cable along with the telephone cable is recommended for new construction projects and renovation projects.

It is also recommended to choose home-run type of wiring over daisy-chain type of wiring for the flexibility that home-run topology affords.

It is extremely important to prevent noise and other interference from getting into the system by using Shielded CAT5 cabling (STP). Shielded cables carry an aluminum foil all around the pack of wires in order to protect them from all types of induction even though twisted pair wires already inherently provide some level of protection. Only use unshielded CAT5 cabling (UTP) when no other choice is given.

When implementing the music distribution system in an existing premise, a number of different scenarios may be encountered in relation to wiring. If only one pair of wires is available out of an existing home-run cable run, then only mono music with a single in-wall speaker is feasible for that location. In addition a Local Port pad must be used for that in-wall speaker. In that event only premise-wide (or wholehouse) open voice paging is equally available. Keep in mind that mono music is well suited for most if not all commercial environments. It may also be just fine for many homes with non-discriminating users.

If two pairs of wires are available out of an existing home-run cable run, mono music with a single in-wall speaker without any associated Local Port pad may be implemented. For stereo output in that location a Local Port pad ought to be associated with that pair of speakers. A desktop speaker set with built-in local port may be chosen as well. A universal multimedia speaker set may equally be chosen.

If three pairs of wires are available out of an existing home-run cable run, stereo music with in-wall speaker pairs is fully available. Keep in mind that there is a limitation on the maximum length of cable run for each speaker set. You do away with that limitation in cable length by adding a Local Port pad or a Power Jack.

The above directives apply to the entire premise wired in home-run topology and also set the variety of music formats and sourcing capability that may be possible depending on wiring conditions throughout the premise.

For a premise that is wired in daisy-chain, there are many limitations imposed by that sort of wiring for in-wall speakers. To do away with those restrictions, all in-wall speaker sets must use a Local Port pad or a Power Jack. All universal multimedia speakers may be used as is in that environment. Desktop speakers with built-in local port may all be used. The format as to mono or stereo is conditioned by whether one pair or two pairs is available throughout the cable chain.
