The Local Port probably stands as the little genie behind the music distribution system that makes many different things possible. It is either  built within the in-wall and desktop types of speakers or fully delivered as a separate unit, the Local Port Pad.

The Local Port Pad strictly associates with the in-wall type of speakers and uses a wall adaptor the cord of which plugs into it. However the Pad may or may not be located near a power outlet as explained below. The Local Port Pad shapes both the wholehouse music coming in from the Controller and the music from the local player for delivery to the associated speakers. It may be located at any height on the wall. If it is going to be located at hand level without the sight of an Adaptor, a Power Jack will be used as explained below. If it is going to be located at the lower side of the wall, the single requirement will be that it be placed close enough to a power receptacle so the connecting cord of the Adaptor may conveniently be kept to the strict minimum, strictly for esthetic purposes. It should also be placed in an open location for easy access by the user.

Rough-in Box

In-wall Speaker

A Local Port Pad may feed power to other Pads thru in-wall wiring so the use of a power Adaptor at those other Pads may be waived. In residential applications this will mostly be feasible in new construction and renovation projects, not retrofitting projects though.

In retrofitting projects the Local Port Pad makes it possible to install an in-wall speaker anywhere there is a phone jack. The installer will locate the Pad at the bottom side of the wall near phone jack and power receptacle and open a fitting rough-in hole on the line above the Pad at the 3/4 height of the wall. The rough-in box for the Pad and the Speaker fitting carry side winglets for tightening them against the wall once in position within the wall, as shown in illustration. The Local Port instrument also makes it possible to replace a whole music distribution system. The Local Port Pad or the Built-in Local Port Kit may be used with any existing 8-ohm or 4-ohm speaker or speaker pair by retrofitting installed wiring.

Feeding a Pad with power from another Pad centrally located in a section of the premise also serves the purpose of defeating the restriction on the length of the connecting cable to a speaker. One Pad may feed as many as three more Pads thru in-wall wiring.

A Local Port Pad may perfectly be mounted at hand level on the wall like a regular light switch without the sight of an associated Adaptor. In this case an extension Power Jack is mounted anywhere best fits near an electrical receptacle so that the Adaptor sits on the receptacle and plugs into the Power Jack. The Power Jack is wired back thru the wall into the Local Port Pad attaching to the Pad's back circuit. Just like a Local Port Pad may feed several other kind Pads, a Power Jack may feed several Local Port Pads. Note that the Power Jack may directly feed in-wall Speakers instead which then must incorporate their own Local Port circuit.

Local Port Pads carry a selection switch for the user to select between wholehouse music and personal music. The personal music player plugs directly into the Pad. A volume knob on the Pad controls the volume level of the wholehouse music. Volume level of music played from a personal player is controlled at the player itself. A Local Port Pad must be used whenever the user ought to have control on volume level of sound outcast by an in-wall speaker.
