RUN YOUR TELECOM WIRES INSIDE WALLS AVOID RUNNING EXTERNAL WIRES WHEREVER POSSIBLE

What about wiring for data networking. Believe it or not, it is simpler than phone wiring. The reason of this simplicity is because data networking implements virtually no switching at the "physical or link layer" as voice systems do. To wire for 10BaseT or 100BaseT networking, you use CAT 5 4-pair cables in star configuration. You terminate all cables in dedicated 8-conductor jack at each outlet. Instead of an M block, you will have a hub with as many ports as you have separate cables in your installation. You terminate each cable at the central point (utility location) with an 8-conductor transparent plug (RJ-45). Use a crimping tool to attach the plugs to the cables.

An economy version of the crimping tool is available which will crimp not only 8-conductor plugs for data cable but also 2-, 4- and 6-conductor plugs for phone cables.

What you just read is what the industry calls structured wiring. Do you feel a little bit overwhelmed? It is really a lot simpler than it looks. With patience, right parts and right tools, you can do it yourself. If you prefer to hire a contractor, at least you have the criteria to evaluate a good structured wiring job.
