In addition a PCX module is small
enough to be inserted directly into the metal box of a standard
wall phone outlet for those who prefer the PCX jack to remain out
of sight. Since these metal boxes do not all have the same
dimensions, in a new construction be sure to use outlet boxes
which the modules will fit in. Size of PCX jacks is:
2 in W × 2.25 in H × 0.75 in D
How
Many PCX Jacks Can Be Installled
PCX jacks do add to the total
Ringer Equivalence of your installation. PCX jacks have a low
Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) of 0.1. This is generally of no
consequence for 2 or 3 of them installed. To install 6 or more be
sure to factor their REN into the total REN of the installation,
which shall not exceed 7.0. Therefore when adding new phones be
mindful of their REN number while choosing them. The lower the REN
the better the phone and the more extension phones you can have in
your installation. All phone sets, and all equipments to be
plugged on a phone line, have their REN written on the label at
the back of the set.
What
Kind of Phones Are Suitable
Any phone that
actually plugs into a phone jack. The PCX module requires a phone
jack to interact with. Therefore wireless handsets that are
satellites to a main base phone are unsuitable for a PCX module,
since they do not plug into an actual phone jack. In fact it may
be more suitable to let these phones, satellite handsets and base
phone, free of PCX filtering, so they can freely operate within
and respond to the distinctive ring environment. Where a small
two-handset wireless system is operating in the same area, bedroom
with two occupants for instance, a PCX jack may be installed to
the base phone which plugs into the wall outlet. Both handsets
will then have the same identity. Note that two PCX jacks may tap
into the same wall phone jack in order to provide two PCX phones
with distinct identities in the same room.
