Have a speakerphone at any location where you wish the music to be delivered off-appliance (like a regular sound appliance). Then you can either put the system in stand-by by pushing [#] and let the phone electronically off-hook or enter the Auto-Answer mode. In stand-by mode, the incoming calls will be delivered to you with call waiting tone from the speakerphone. The tone is strong enough for you to hear it very clearly from the speaker at a distance, while your background music is playing. You hit the speaker button twice to take the call. When the conversation is over, you hit the button to terminate the call and hit it back to reenter the stand-by mode. If for some reason, you don't want to take a call after you heard the warning tone, you can just hit the speaker button. Then all the phones around the home will ring for someone else to pick the call. In Auto-Answer mode the incoming calls will be announced with the same tone, but the connection will be immediately effective after the release of the tone. Termination of the call will also be automatic following hang up by the remote caller, in Auto-Answer mode. Whether you use one mode or the other is determined by the convenience of the situation. Same holds true if you use a cordless or corded headset while you are around the home or outdoors jogging. It's up to you to decide how you specifically want to use this capability in any occasion. See more here. With the system as is, you have to unplug the audio source to remove  the background music from the system. If you wish to have the flexibility to turn the background music on and off at will by entering a code from the phones, you have to use the standby mode and also an audio appliance with a built-in control input for turning it on or off (a cassette player with a REM input for instance). In this case you would use the Remote-In jack of the Unit to control the appliance. If you do not have  an appliance with built-in control input, you can  always use two X10 modules, one for the Ultimatoll Unit and one for your regular music appliance. In all cases, to turn the music on, you dial from any phone [#]+[82]+[1]; to turn the music off, you dial: [#]+[82]+0]. You can do this at any time, in the middle of a conversation or not. When you implement background music with the system this way, you cannot implement phone conversation recording. The background music source is completely independent from the music-on-hold source. To have both functions in service (music on hold and background music), you need two distinct appliances. Both sources will never be delivered to the line at the same time. While this implementation of the background music is in effect, all other in-home users will be able to communicate but with your phone or any other(s) permanently activated. They can lift the handset of any phone and talk right there. The intercom will then basically function as a paging system.
