With these telephone intercom systems, to intercom with someone else in the home simply pick up a handset and punch [#] and the single-digit ID assigned to the person you wish to call. Then hang up for all the phones in the home, including yours, to start ringing. They will do so in a distinctive fashion (one ring tone for ID 1, two ring tones for ID 2, and so forth). When the person you are calling picks up the handset, the ring tones will stop. That also tells you to pick up your handset back to engage the conversation.
